This part is absolutely critical: MARK IT SO THAT IT CAN BE IDENTIFIED AS YOURS! Stamp or write the NECD number or a post code or any unique number onto your tack, rugs, etc MAKE THE MARK AS VISIBLE AS POSSIBLE. We know you do not want to deface your beautiful saddle, so please take a look at our
tack stamping guide by clicking here: you can also mark the inside of the saddle flap using our tack marking pen. Rugs can be marked using our Rug Marker Paint Pen. Make it very obvious that all of the items on your yard
have been marked and registered, put up signs to this effect. Once thieves see that your property is registered, they will not want to steal it because it can easily be identified as stolen property. If you wish, you can purchase NECD signs by calling our customer services team on 0800 019 9044.
Register the mark, or any serial number, microchip number, passport number, chassis number, engine number, gearbox number etc on to the NECD system. Think about this; a number or post code stamped on a saddle or a chassis number on a trailer that is not registered with our central database is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. (At least you could eat the teapot!) If an item is offered for sale in Scotland with a Surrey postcode or an unregistered serial number/chassis number stamped onto it, the prospective buyer has no way of checking to see if it is stolen property. If it is registered, the buyer can check instantly on their mobile phone or computer without the need to call anyone. We also recommend you include good quality pictures of the horse or item and upload them to your account. Please click here to see our guide to photographing horses.
Once the number is registered in your account on the NECD system, should your horse, tack, trailer etc be stolen, Vets when vetting a horse, the police, ports, auction houses, in fact anyone, can check to see if the item or horse has been stolen, anywhere in the world using a normal mobile phone or Computer. If it has been stolen, they will be given brief details of the incident along the phone number of the police force dealing with the crime and the crime reference number. This will allow the police to quickly reunite you with your stolen horse, tack or other item. Our system will never give out your Personal details, so your data protection is assured.
